Here’s how your body keeps a score after trauma

Traumatic toxic work spaces leave behind invisible imprints that can linger long after we’ve left the toxic work space. They also leave traces on our minds and emotions, on our own capacity for joy and fulfillment, and even on our immune systems.  One thing about trauma is that it affects not only those directly exposed to it, but also those around them. Picture this scenario: you’re no longer at that toxic work space, yet something lingers, an echo of the past that refuses to fade. It’s like carrying a weight you can’t shake off, a heavy burden of memories and shame that tugs at your spirit. It’s exhausting, isn’t it? Trying to function while carrying the weight of what you endured, the vulnerability you felt, the scars left by a toxic work space. What’s worse is that trauma doesn’t just affect the individual who experienced it firsthand. It ripples out, touching those around us, leaving its mark on relationships, on interactions, on the very fabric of our lives. Our brains which are wired for survival, aren’t great at letting go of trauma. Long after professionals physically leave a toxic work space, what happens can often get reactivated at the slightest hint of danger and it ends up releasing massive amounts of stress hormones. This results in victims or survivors feeling out of control and fear that they can’t move beyond what happened to them. So, how do we re-gain control? How do we reclaim our sense of self, our autonomy, our peace of mind? We believe talking helps. So does understanding, and human connection. Sometimes, medication can dial down the hyperactive alarm systems that trauma triggers. But perhaps the most profound transformation comes from physical experiences that defy the helplessness and rage that trauma instills. Reclaiming your body, your strength, your agency. Engaging in activities that remind you of your power, that counteract the sense of collapse that trauma brings. It’s not a one-size-fits-all solution, mind you. What works for one person may not work for another. But the beauty lies in the variety of approaches available, in the multitude of paths to healing. Experts in our community have the skills to help you navigate the workplace as they’ve seen it all. From talk therapy to medication to alternative modalities, each has its place in the healing journey. What matters most is finding what resonates with you, what speaks to your unique experience and needs. So, to all those who’ve experienced trauma from a toxic workplaces, know this: you are not defined by what you’ve endured. You are resilient, capable of transforming pain into power, trauma into triumph.

Are most professionals still professionally hang-overed from 2023?

Ah, January—the month where our calendars reset, and the memories of the past year seem to haunt us in the corridors of our professional minds. For many professionals, it’s not just about new beginnings; it’s about unpacking the unspoken hangover from the challenges and experiences of yesteryear. It’s the month when the baggage of the past tends to be hidden away, unaddressed, and yet, it casts a shadow over the fresh start we all crave. Today, we are sharing insights from a roundtable conversation we had on professional hangovers. The roundtable session provided a space for pros in our community to unpack their thoughts on workplace experiences, professional development, and the highs and lows of the past year. Turns out most of us are Hang-overed. Here at Toxic Work Spaces, the term “professional hangover” metaphorically refers to the lingering effects or residue of past professional experiences, both positive and negative, that continue to influence and shape an individual’s current mindset and approach in the workplace. Nora Nyongesa, our Psychologist and associate character coach, defines hangover as metaphorically hanging over one’s current professional mindset. This can showcase the residual effects of both positive and challenging workplace experiences, shaping an individual’s approach, decisions, and outlook as they navigate the workplace. Moses Kinyanjui, our community manager, who is a drug addiction counsellor looks at a hangover like a drug and alcohol feeling you get from a night of celebration on a random workday night and how that might affect how someone feels the next day. Moses links a professional hangover to his work and suggests that the experiences, challenges, and successes from the previous year are still casting a shadow over the individual’s professional mindset. It can be a combination of emotions, reflections, and influences that professionals carry forward into the new year. The round-table was somewhat a roller coaster of shared experiences, ranging from workplace wins to the less-than-glamorous tales of the workplace that our pros experienced in 2023. Professionals opened up about what worked, what didn’t, and the emotional residue left behind by the challenges of the previous year. There are three common causes of workplace issues that can contribute to a professional hangover: Toxic Work Spaces: If as a professional you work in a workspace that is filled with negative behaviors, lack of collaboration, and poor communication, it can significantly contribute to a professional hangover. The impact of the constant exposure to toxicity, such as office politics, discrimination, or bullying, can leave lasting emotional and psychological effects on employees. This negative atmosphere may hinder professional growth, erode job satisfaction, and create a sense of mistrust. Unclear Career Development Paths: When employees feel uncertain about their career progression within an organization, it can lead to frustration and a sense of stagnation. The impact of not having clear career development paths leads an employee to experience a professional hangover as they reflect on their accomplishments and question the direction of their careers. This uncertainty can lead to a lack of motivation and engagement in their current roles. Ineffective Leadership: If there’s poor leadership in your work space, which is marked by a lack of communication, inconsistency, or an inability to address team issues, it can create a challenging work environment. The impact of this is a situation where professionals feel disheartened, unsupported, and disconnected from the organization’s vision.  In an ideal workplace, employees often look to leadership for guidance, support, and a positive work culture. In the absence of effective leadership, This lack of leadership can contribute to a professional hangover as employees question their commitment to the company and their own career goals. 3 signs that professionals should look out for to identify if they might be experiencing a professional hangover: Lack of Motivation and Enthusiasm: Sign: A noticeable decline in motivation, enthusiasm, and engagement in daily work tasks. Indicator: If you find yourself consistently lacking the energy or excitement you once had for your job, it could be a sign of a professional hangover. This may manifest as a feeling of indifference towards projects or a general disinterest in taking on new challenges. Persistent Stress and Anxiety: Sign: Continuous feelings of stress, anxiety, or unease related to work responsibilities. Indicator: If thoughts about work consistently cause heightened stress levels or a sense of unease, it may be a sign of a professional hangover. This could result from unresolved issues, a challenging work environment, or the lingering impact of past workplace experiences affecting your mental well-being. Reflection on Past Setbacks: Sign: Regular dwelling on past professional setbacks or a sense of disappointment about the trajectory of your career. Indicator: If you frequently find yourself revisiting and dwelling on past challenges, failures, or missed opportunities in your career, it may indicate a professional hangover. This reflective pattern can hinder your ability to focus on present goals and create a barrier to moving forward positively. As we continue helping professionals to navigate the workplace, it’s crucial to recognize the subtle yet profound impact of a professional hangover—the echoes of the past year still resonating in our day-to-day experiences. Our journey through this blog post has revealed the diverse manifestations of this phenomenon, from workplace triumphs to the unseen effects of a hangover in a toxic work space. But fear not! The cure for your professional hangover lies not in isolation but in collective understanding and shared strategies. In March, we invite you to join our open session, where professionals like yourself, we call them Pros Like Us, will come together to unpack, share, discuss, and detoxify from the remnants of the past professional experiences.  We’ll share more details on that but for now, we promise that it will be more than just a round table—we’d want it to be a platform with growth, resilience, and the solutions to your professional hangover. Because in this space, the only thing we’re hanging over is the thrill of progress.

Disconnection In The Workplace

In 2024, professionals will continue to find themselves at a crossroads between embracing their authentic selves and conforming to societal expectations within the workplace. The struggle to maintain authenticity, especially in a toxic work space can lead to disconnection, hindering not only personal well-being but also affecting professional growth and collaboration. Leaders should be concerned that many professionals feel compelled to mask their true selves, stifling their natural personalities to conform to social pressures within the workplace. The fear of being misunderstood or excluded prompts individuals to adopt a corporate facade, creating a barrier that prevents genuine connections from flourishing. The consequences of this disconnection extend beyond personal discomfort. When professionals are unable to be their authentic selves, their ability to make meaningful connections at work is compromised. This lack of genuine connection affects teamwork, innovation, and overall job satisfaction, ultimately hampering organizational success. Solutions leaders can explore: We believe that leaders can help address the disconnection and create a workplace culture that encourages authenticity and connection. They must proactively address the disconnection dilemma. Here’s how: They can emphasize the importance of diversity and create an inclusive environment where employees feel valued for their unique contributions. By encouraging open dialogue about different perspectives and experiences can also help. They can demonstrate authenticity by sharing their own experiences, challenges, and successes. This vulnerability creates a culture of openness, giving employees the confidence to be themselves. Leaders can equip employees with the skills to understand and navigate their emotions, as well as those of their colleagues. We believe emotional intelligence is crucial for building empathy and fostering genuine connections. It’s important for leaders to support employees in their personal and professional growth. This could include providing resources for skill development, mentorship programs, or wellness initiatives that contribute to overall well-being. And finally they can establish forums or channels where employees can express their thoughts and feelings without fear of judgement. This can include regular team-building activities, feedback sessions, or even anonymous suggestion boxes. In a nutshell, if leaders acknowledge and address the challenges of workplace disconnection, they can pave the way for a more inclusive, authentic, and connected corporate culture.  In 2024, we will be working directly with leaders advising and guiding them on how to create better work spaces where professionals feel comfortable being themselves as this will enhance individual well-being and eventually lead the organization towards sustained success.  Get in touch with us at admin@toxicworkspaces.com to learn more or book a discovery session with us.

Why It’s Hard To Leave A Toxic Work Space

The world of professional life is fast-paced and some professionals often find themselves caught in toxic work spaces. The unsettling truth is that, despite the detrimental impact on mental health and overall job satisfaction, less than 1.5% of employees make the daring move to leave such toxic spaces. This phenomenon raises crucial questions about the reasons behind this reluctance to leave toxic work spaces. Is it the fear of the unknown, the devil-you-know-is-better-than-the-devil-you-don’t mentality, or something deeper?  In this blog post, we explore the reasons employees feel trapped and offer insights on how to navigate and ultimately escape toxic work spaces. One of the primary reasons individuals remain in toxic work spaces is the psychological comfort associated with familiarity. Much like a bad relationship that we hesitate to end, employees often choose to stay in the known, fearing the uncertainty that accompanies change. This resistance to change is deeply ingrained in human nature, and breaking free from a toxic work space requires a conscious effort to confront this fear head-on. The age-old adage “the devil you know is better than the devil you don’t” encapsulates the mindset that keeps employees tethered to toxic work spaces. The fear of stepping into the unknown, where the challenges and dynamics are unfamiliar, can be paralyzing. However, it’s essential to recognize that personal and professional growth often comes from embracing change, even when it feels uncomfortable. Remaining in a toxic work space for an extended period can lead to professional stagnation. The negative impact on mental health, productivity, and job satisfaction can hinder career progression and personal development. It’s crucial for professionals to assess the long-term consequences of staying in a toxic work space and consider the potential for growth and fulfillment outside of these stifling environments. Leaving a toxic work space is a courageous step towards personal and professional well-being. As a consulting and advisory firm specializing in workplace dynamics, we urge both employees and leaders to foster environments where individuals can thrive. It’s time to shift the narrative surrounding toxic work spaces, championing workplace cultures that prioritize employee well-being, growth, and satisfaction. In conclusion, it’s imperative to recognize the grip toxic work spaces can have on individuals and take proactive steps towards change. By fostering a culture of support, understanding, and empowerment, we can collectively create workplaces where individuals no longer feel stuck but instead find the inspiration to flourish. Would you like support navigating a toxic work space? If so, our team is here to guide you through that and building a fulfilling career.
